20 Selected Definitions of Biotechnology

Definitions of Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the perfect combination of biology and technology(Bio +Technology) actually it is the combination of these two fields that are applied to benefits for industrial areas, our medical field, environment health, many more. The term, biotechnology is of recent origin, the discipline itself is very old.

Different scientists and researchers have different views to explain the term biotechnology, here are 20 different definitions that explain biotechnology. These definitions are reproduced below with the view orient the readers to the nature and scope of the discipline.

1.

Biotechnology is a fusion of biology and technology means the use of biological agents or their components for generating useful products services.

2.

The applications of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by biological agents to provide goods and services.

3.

Any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms, or a derivative thereof, to make or modify products or processes for a specific use.

4.

The applications of biological organisms, systems, and processes to manufacturing and service industries.

5.

Biotechnology consists of “the controlled use of biological agents, such as micro-organisms or cellular components, for biological use”-U.S. National Science Foundation.

6.

The controlled use of biological agents such as microorganisms or cellular components for beneficial purposes.

7.

Biotechnology is “the integrated use of biochemistry, microbiology, and engineering sciences to achieve the technological application of the capabilities of microorganisms, cultured tissues/cells, and parts thereof”-European Federation of Biotechnology.

8.

The use of living organisms and their components in agriculture, food, and other industries.

9.

Biotechnology is a technology that utilizes biological systems, living organisms, or parts of this to develop to create different products-NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

10.

The use of biological organisms and their constituents for the transformation of inputs into commercial outputs.

11.

A technology using biological phenomena for copying and manufacturing various kinds of useful substances.

12.

Biotechnology Comprises the “Controlled and deliberate applications of simple biological agents-living or dead or cell components -in technically useful operations, either of productive manufacture or as service operation”-J.D. Bu’ lock,1987.

13.

The industrial production of goods and services by processes using biological organisms, systems, and processes.

14.

Biotechnology may be defined as “the use of living organisms in systems or processes for the manufacture of useful products. It may involve bacteria, algae, fungi yeast, cells of higher plants or animals, or subsystems of any of these or isolated components from living matter”-Gibbs and Greenhalgh,1983.

15.

“ The application of biological organisms, systems or processes” Constitutes biotechnology-British Biotechnologist.

16.

The use of living organisms to solve problems or make useful products.

17.

Biotechnology is the branch of science in which living things are used to make a new product.

18.

A set of techniques and processes involving biological materials.

19.

The Processes, which are based on the natural capabilities of micro-organisms, etc are commonly considered as old biotechnology.

20.

Biotechnology is the use of biological processes, organisms, or systems to manufacture products intended to improve the quality of human life-Margaret Rouse at whatls.com.

The area covered under biotechnology is very vast and the technique involved is highly divergent; this often made a precise definition of the subject rather difficult.

Green biotechnology

17 Most Important Applications Of Green biotechnology Agrobiotechnology  Green biotechnology related to plants of improving both the quality and quantity of plants. The main goal of green biotechnology is the production of an improved variety of plants, with the help of biotechnology-based techniques that should be environmentally friendly solutions.  The main aim of green biotechnology is to tackle food security issues and reduce the environmental footprint of the industry. Green biotechnology can improve the global food situation.  17 Most Important Applications Of Green Biotechnology :  1. Micropropagation  One of the most important applications of green biotechnology is the micropropagation of plant species. this technique has attained the status of a large plant-based industry. Micropropagation is the true type of propagation of selected genotypes using small pieces of tissues which can stay as an important technique for rapid production of many commercially important plants lik

Red Biotechnology

20 Major Applications Of Red Biotechnology Red Biotechnology is a branch of modern biotechnology T he term Biotechnology was introduced by a Hungarian engineer, Karl Ereky in 1917. Ereky defined biotechnology as “ all lines of work by which products are produced from raw materials with the aid of living things”. Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary application. Biotechnological research has a wide range of applications that are shown in medical and health science, agriculture science, and environmental science. Bio-Pharmaceutical is known as Red- Biotechnology. This branch of biotechnology is related to health care. The main utilization of this branch is shown in the field of medicine. Red biotechnology helps to improve the quality of life. Red-Biotechnology has a wide range of applications. Many applications are shown in medical and health science, genetic engineering, gene therapy, and many more fields related to the medical line. 20 Major Applications of Red Biotechnology are: 1.

Milestones in the history of Plant Tissue Culture

Milestones in the history of Plant Tissue Culture  20 Scientists name and their contribution to Plant Tissue culture         Gottlieb Haberlandt - Father of Plant Tissue Culture  Plant Tissue Culture is an in vitro aseptic conditions of plant cells, tissues, or organs maintained growth under sterile conditions on a nutrient culture medium of known composition. It is a collection of various techniques that helps for the development of the plants under the artificial environment that produces the required plant quickly. In short, Plant tissue culture is the growth of organs, tissues, or cells in an artificial medium. Applications part of Plant Tissue Culture are : It is the most efficient technology for crop improvement. Production of the plant by Plant Tissue culture technology has the capability to resistance to various diseases.  The plants become tolerable to stress. The most important application of plant tissue culture is the micropropagation of plant species. It is an important
